Don't Know Your Birth Time? What Your Bazi Chart Can Still Tell You

SajuClarity Editorial · September 15, 2026

A full Bazi (Saju) chart is eight characters: two each from your year, month, day, and hour of birth. If you don't know your birth time, the hour pillar is missing and you're left with six. That still leaves your Day Master, your month pillar, and most of your five-element balance fully readable — what goes dark is mainly the hour pillar itself and anything that depends on it.

To show exactly where that line falls, we ran one birth date — March 20, 1990 — through all 12 possible birth hours and compared the charts.

The Six Characters That Never Move

PillarCharactersChanges with birth time?
Year庚午 (Geng-Wu)No
Month己卯 (Ji-Mao)No
Day甲申 (Jia-Shen)No
HourYes — 12 possibilities

From these six characters alone, two of the most load-bearing facts in the whole chart are already settled:

  • The Day Master is Yang Wood (甲). Every Ten God relationship in the chart is read against this one character, and it doesn't move regardless of hour.
  • The month pillar's element (Wood) doesn't change. A large share of how a chart is typically framed comes from here.

So "I don't know my birth time" doesn't mean "I don't have a chart." It means one pillar out of four is undetermined.

All 12 Hours, Side by Side

Hour branchBirth time windowHour pillarDay Master's strength
Rat23:00–00:59甲子Strong
Ox01:00–02:59乙丑Balanced
Tiger03:00–04:59丙寅Balanced
Rabbit05:00–06:59丁卯Balanced
Dragon07:00–08:59戊辰Balanced
Snake09:00–10:59己巳Supported
Horse11:00–12:59庚午Supported
Goat13:00–14:59辛未Balanced
Monkey15:00–16:59壬申Balanced
Rooster17:00–18:59癸酉Balanced
Dog19:00–20:59甲戌Balanced
Pig21:00–22:59乙亥Balanced

Two things worth noticing:

  1. The strength grade isn't always identical, but it isn't chaos either. This chart lands "Balanced" for most of the 12 hours, "Strong" for the Rat hour, and "Supported" for the Snake and Horse hours. The Day Master itself never changes — what shifts is how much extra weight the hour pillar adds to one side of the scale.
  2. The five-element count shifts by exactly one or two. Water sits at zero for most of the day, and only appears (as a single character) if the birth hour is Rat, Monkey, Rooster, or Pig. Metal goes from two characters to three for four of the twelve hours. Nothing more dramatic than that — the hour pillar is one character out of eight, so it can only move the needle so far.

What Actually Depends on the Hour Pillar

  • Relationships to the day branch. This chart's day branch is 申 (Monkey). Born in the Tiger hour, the hour branch 寅 sits in direct opposition to 申 — the two branches clash. Born in the Monkey hour instead, the hour branch matches the day branch exactly, doubling it rather than opposing it. Same birth date, two structurally different outcomes, decided entirely by a two-hour window.
  • Anything read from the hour pillar's own Ten God — in this chart, that ranges from Friend (Rat hour) to Direct Officer (Goat hour) to Seven Killings (Monkey hour), each pointing to a different reading.
  • What doesn't depend on it: the Day Master, the month pillar, and most of the year pillar's influence stay put no matter which of the 12 hours turns out to be correct.

How a Real Reading Narrows It Down

When the exact hour isn't on record, that's exactly how a certified Level-1 Saju (Myeongri) counselor — the same background behind SajuClarity's reading system — works through it: building all 12 candidate charts and checking which one the rest of a person's known life actually fits, using the years and patterns the chart itself predicts as the test.

It's a real method, but it has real limits. It leans on memory ("it was early morning" narrows 12 candidates to 2 or 3, nothing more precise), more than one candidate chart can look plausible at once, and two readers working from the same story can land on different hours. That's why it's called narrowing down, not confirming — it's an estimate, not a measurement.

That's also why SajuClarity doesn't guess at a birth time you don't have. When the hour is unknown, we read the six characters that are actually known — no invented hour pillar, and no reading built on a guess.

Try It With Your Own Chart
